How many uses and meanings are there for X? from an unknown variable, such as the power of X in maths, or needing to spend $X, to the Roman numeral for 10, to meaning just for adults (X-rated), to red pen telling you your homework is wrong, and even a kiss at the end of a letter or text!
The phrase "X marks the spot" is a simple yet powerful expression that has captured our imagination for generations. It conjures images of treasure maps, where an X shows the location of hidden riches. But beyond adventure tales and pirate lore, the X can be used to denote incorrectness, such as when marking answers on a test, or can be used to make a selection, such as when casting a vote on a ballot. With local and state elections on the horizon, we got to wondering about the meaning of X (and not just in a flashback to high school maths way!).
The earliest known use of the phrase “X marks the spot” was in 1813, although there is suggestion that it was used before this time. Most scholars do not believe that pirates really used treasure maps – it is more likely the phrase was invented for effect in literature!
The use of the letter X as a signature alternative has gained prominence as an accessibility feature, enabling people living with a disability, particularly those with limited fine motor skills, to endorse documents independently. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone can exercise their rights, access services, and participate in legal transactions with ease. In this way, X transcends physical limitations, contributing to equality and accessibility in our increasingly digital world.
In the context of voting, the X symbolises the essence of democratic participation. It represents a citizen's voice, their choice, and their right to influence the course of their community, region, or nation. When you place an X next to a candidate's name, you are marking your choice, and in doing so, you are helping to shape the future.
The X on a ballot signifies accountability, transparency, and the power of collective decision-making. It embodies the principle that every eligible citizen, regardless of their background, has a say in the democratic process. It is a symbol of unity, reminding us that in the act of voting, we are all equal, with one X having the same weight as any other.
The simplicity of the X is deceptive. It carries the weight of civic duty and responsibility, and it plays a fundamental role in shaping the path of our communities and societies. It's a reminder that even in an era of complex challenges and multifaceted issues, a single mark can make a significant difference.
In conclusion, the X in "X marks the spot" signifies more than a treasure hunt; it signifies a treasure we hold dear—our democracy. It's a testament to the power of individual choice and collective action, reminding us that every vote counts, and every X shapes our shared future. So, when you see that blank space on a ballot, remember the meaning behind the X and the importance of your decision in shaping our world.
With local government voting coming in March 2024, consider what your X may be worth!
With that in mind, think Cardzilla. Think Cardzilla for your electioneering material: corflutes, flyers, posters, banners, pull-up banners, voting ballot papers, team t-shirts and quirky printed products to capture your audiences. When looking for a local provider who employs and produces giving back to your community, vote Cardzilla!
In today's fast-paced digital age, it's easy to overlook the effectiveness of traditional marketing materials like flyers. However, high-quality 300gsm (grams per square metre) flyers remain a powerful tool for promoting your business.
Often customers need info they can take away and digest or refer to later. Flyers allow customers to do this and also enable you to ‘talk’ to customers you can’t actually speak to.
Here's why they can make a significant impact on your marketing strategy:
Durability and Professionalism
When you invest in flyers, you're not just getting a piece of paper; you're getting a sturdy, durable marketing asset. A higher weight (gsm) gives your flyers a premium feel, conveying professionalism and reliability. This durability ensures that your message remains intact, making a lasting impression on potential customers.
Vibrant Colours and Sharp Graphics
Quality flyers provide a canvas for vibrant colours and sharp graphics. Whether you're showcasing your products, services, or a special promotion, the high-quality paper can handle intricate designs, rich colour palettes, and high-resolution images. This visual appeal captures attention and communicates the value of your offerings effectively.
Enhanced Textures and Finishes
Flyers can be customised to have a matte or gloss finish. These options allow you to create flyers that match your brand's personality and resonate with your target audience. The tactile experience adds an extra layer of engagement, making your message memorable.
Versatility in Content
Flyers are versatile marketing tools that can serve a range of purposes. Whether you're announcing an upcoming event, showcasing your product line, or sharing customer testimonials, 300gsm flyers provide the ideal platform to deliver your message concisely and compellingly.
Tangibility and Recall
In a digital world flooded with information, physical marketing materials like 300gsm flyers stand out. When customers can hold your flyer in their hands, it creates a tangible connection with your brand. This tactile experience enhances recall and makes your business more memorable.
Cost-Effective Marketing
Quality flyers are a cost-effective marketing solution. They offer a high return on investment because they are relatively inexpensive to produce but yield great results. You can print them in bulk, distribute them widely, and reap the benefits.
Targeted Distribution
One of the great advantages of flyers is the ability to target specific locations and demographics. By strategically distributing your flyers, you can reach potential customers in your desired areas, ensuring that your marketing efforts are reaching the right audience.
Quality flyers are a versatile, cost-effective, and powerful tool for marketing your business. Their durability, visual appeal, and tactile experience make them a standout choice for delivering your message effectively. Don't underestimate the enduring impact that a well-designed and professionally printed flyer can have on your marketing strategy.

For those of us in the know, the big C, in this case Corflute, is way more for less. The big thing about Corflute is the finished product is both durable and cheap – you see it regularly used as advertising, marketing or temporary signage - think sporting club sign on signs, election boards or bigger For Sale signs and construction site signage. We print from small to large sheets but why choose Corflute?
So what is ‘Corflute’? In short it’s a double wall corrugated polypropylene, a plastic which is lightweight yet rigid, usually around 3mm to 5mm in thickness. It has medium longevity when used outside making it ideal for temporary signage.
Whether your budget is small or you have an event needing large volumes of signage, Corflute is the most customisable, cost-effective material you can print on in todays market, and the benefits don't stop there!
It has high impact resistance, is die-cuttable, weather and water resistant. The Corflute product is light and tough and is resistant to greases and oils. We can use a UV protecting laminate when we print to give additional UV resistance to products for longer lasting products suitable to our Far Northern climates.
Easy to transport and being sturdy and tough, ensures your marketing message doesn't end up with "doggy ears" whilst in transportation like some of its cousin materials like paper print-outs.
Be creative and ensure your signage is fit for purpose, our fully customisable Corflute signage options can be tailored to best suit your individual needs and purpose. Your potential customers decide if they would like to connect with your brand within a matter of minutes. If they don’t engage with your logo design, you may miss out completely on their business, regardless of how fantastic your offering is. Common sense should tell most people that how something is presented will influence the perception of those viewing it. Typically, why do lawyers wear suits, real estate agents drive upmarket cars, and young single people spend much time and money on appearance!?
Whether you are looking or not, people generally judge with their eyes. First impressions last, be it the daughter's new boyfriend or the restaurant menu!
'Sales' is worse than a four-letter word - it has five letters! Despite many people being averse to sales or selling, EVERYONE does it. If you have a job or a partner, you have likely sold yourself to someone (or the bank!). Most kids sell their parents the idea of why they should have or do something, and everyone has surely sold themselves on why the desert is a good idea. In all these, sight and presentation have played a role; what you wear on a date or to the bank, the natural 'puppy dog eyes' that convince mum/dad it's a good idea and the picture of pure deliciousness on the menu.
If you are in business, presentation is crucial to your success. The only service that really relies on something other than selling itself is the Emergency Ward at the hospital. In this case, the doctor may not need to consider their presentation, but the rest of us really do rely on giving a good impression to sway the perception of the customer toward our product or service.
Business first impressions are given by anything that introduces it to the customer; business card, signage, adverts, documentation (forms/flyers/brochures/menus), uniform and the business premise, especially the entry area. These are all key to making that first impression.
Cardzilla has the tagline of 'Build your business with Cardzilla', and we mean it as the products we create are often the first impression of your business to someone. If you realise that your business may need a facelift or update with regard to the first impression it gives, please make sure to contact us today.
Most of the brain deals with sight as its influence is huge on our decision-making (what we buy or what services we use). Sight is the most common sense.

Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride Secures Major Sponsor. The Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride is excited to announce that Cardzilla has come on board as the major sponsor for the 2023 event.
Cardzilla has been a sponsor of the ride for the last four years and this year they have partnered with Smartech Business Systems to increase their support. Their contribution and sponsorship to the ongoing growth of the event ensures that the Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride continues to make a positive impact on the education of kids in remote regions that need to access distance education.
“We are very proud to be the major sponsors of the Cardzilla Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride 2023, with the support of Smartech Business Systems, and to continue to support this amazing cause. Over the years of being involved with this event we have seen the gratitude firsthand of the families that are the recipients of the fundraising and the impact it has on the education of their children that rely on distance education.” – said Mr. Steve Bates, Co-Owner Cardzilla.
The Cardzilla Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride is a 780km bucket list bike ride across the top of Australia. There are many unique aspects to the multi-day event including being predominantly volunteer based.
Initially called The Coast to Coast Bike Ride, it began through the Cairns School of Distance Education P&C Association in 1997 to originally address the need to build a multi-purpose activity centre for the school site in Cairns.
Early in the life of the event the decision was made to spread the benefits of funds raised to include many communities and organizations across the North Queensland region. The main criteria involved the benefits being focused on supporting and benefiting children who live in the remote rural areas of the region. Today beneficiaries include Cairns School of Distance Education, P&Cs of primary schools – including Mt Garnet, Mt Surprise, Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton, and Karumba as well as child care centres, sports associations, and more than due to their remote location cannot hold annual fetes for fundraising.
The funds from the ride have supported the introduction of telephone bridging into schools and stations and a much improved and very reliable communication system for students to undertake classes. This includes core school subjects, languages, and special activities such as the school
Eisteddfod, Scouts as well as instrumental music. Schools including Mt Garnet, Mt Surprise, Georgetown, Croydon, Normanton and Karumba as well as other organisations receiving funds have purchased sporting equipment, shade on play areas, technology, computer and software packages, educational trips, swimming pool equipment, medical equipment, buildings and more.
“Smartech has partnered with Cardzilla, one of our larger clients, as we believe the opportunity to give back to community, especially in the development of children, is important and we could see the enthusiasm the guys from Cardzilla had for the ride and cause. We wish you all the best.” -Vincent Nair, CEO, Smartech Business Systems.”
The Cardzilla Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride (C2K) is a 7-day, charity bike ride that is in its 26th year and involves over 250 participants each year.
Registrations are now open and riders have until 31 May 2023 to secure their place in the event. The ride dates are from 24 to 30 June and riders who register before 1 May will be guaranteed their preferred jersey size.

“It is wonderful to have the support of the business community to ensure the continuity of this charity event. No matter where you live, access to quality education should always be a priority for everyone. We are very excited and grateful to have Cardzilla as our major sponsor for this year’s event.” – said Ms. Helena McInnes, Bike Ride Coordinator.
The Cairns to Karumba Bike Ride would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the sponsors for their support of the event. Without their help, the event would not be possible. If you would like your business to get involved, please contact Helena.

Did Kindle kill the humble book? No, and neither has digital killed print advertising! A flyer (generally a single unfolded sheet) or a brochure (usually a folded sheet) still have a place in many businesses today. Digital marketing works but flyers and brochures are still big sellers. Why?
Here’s our take, flyers and brochures get used in many ways for various businesses. They are a cheap way to advertise a special for a short time, especially to a targeted audience, such as show handouts, letterbox drops, PO Box inserts and compendiums.
Save time and resources by advertising and/or informing without having to talk directly to the end user by providing product and service information: countertop product information, tour details, directions and usage instructions. They are highly useful as a reminder and reference for products and services like menus, rate cards and opening times.
Flyers and brochures are tactile and left around, reinforcing your brand and product/service many times over at the same initial cost (no click charges like online).
With premium products/services, a quality piece of print on a heavier stock and professionally designed artwork reinforces that superior quality. It often helps justify the higher price of the product/service. Think about being handed a standard copy weight paper flyer, obviously produced and printed in the office, asking you to come on a tour, visit an attraction or sell a product, versus a high gloss full-colour card which has a body and great images inviting you to look as you feel the thickness of the stock between your fingers and thumb – which are you likely to read and keep hold of AND be positively influenced by?
You can’t poke a digital device into houses or businesses in an area you want to market your products or services to, but you can leave a flyer or brochure. An advert on a digital screen is usually moved away from quickly where a flyer or brochure hangs about on coffee tables, counters, desks, dashboards and handbags and gets to give subtle subliminal reminders about its content.
Not everyone is tech-savvy. There are still plenty of old-school people around who don’t go online much but are still influenced by print. Who knows, your flyer makes you take centre stage on the fridge door in someone’s house for many years to come and not be swiped away.
A flyer or brochure can reinforce information already given by chatting to a customer, “Here, please take one of these; you’ll find more information here”, and this actually serves to reinforce the knowledge you shared and form that relationship you need to gain a customer.
As the first point of contact with a new client, a business card represents you and your company long after you've left the room. Your business card works hard to let people know what you do, your position within the business and lists out all the essential contact information to relocate you again. To grow your customer base and reputation, creating a memorable business card is a must in order to stand out from the crowd and be considered.
Your business cards are a cost-effective marketing tools and should be treated as such. If it stands out and is memorable, people will keep the card. If your business card is poorly designed, has a hard-to-read font, contains outdated information and is generic, it lands in the draw alongside all the others! Ensure all your essential information is on the card and is up to date!
