Origins of Print Advertising

The Earliest Signs of Printed Advertisements

Advertising is something we encounter every day, from billboards and bus wraps to social media campaigns. But where did it all begin? The history of printed advertising goes back longer than you think, showing just how long people have been using print to promote themselves, their products, and their businesses.

Ancient Beginnings

The very first "printed ads" weren’t printed in the way we think of today, but they were physical, visual messages. Archaeologists have uncovered stone carvings and papyrus posters in ancient Egypt promoting goods for sale and even public notices. In the ruins of Pompeii, wall paintings and inscriptions were used to advertise gladiator events and political campaigns – even thousands of years ago, businesses and leaders understood the power of visibility. But we’re pretty glad we don’t have to carve our designs into stone these days…

The Printing Revolution

The real shift came in the 15th century with Johannes Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press. For the first time, businesses could reproduce multiple copies of the same message! By the 1470s, printed posters and handbills began circulating in Europe to advertise books, medicines, and public performances. These were the earliest recognisable forms of printed marketing materials; the ancestors of the flyers, brochures, and posters we know today.

From Then to Now

By the 17th century, newspapers brought advertising to the masses. Small print ads promoted everything from coffee shops to sailing expeditions, giving rise to the commercial advertising industry. Over time, businesses began realising that print wasn’t just about words – it was about design, logos, and creating a brand identity.

You probably wouldn’t want to advertise this way today…

Why It Matters Today

Looking back, the principles of advertising haven’t really changed: it’s all about standing out, telling your story, and connecting with your community.
